Vaughan City Hall has resumed its normal operations after the York Regional Police evacuated the building for a probe into a suspicious package.

On Sept. 9, at around 3:10 p.m., police were called to 2141 Major Mackenzie Drive on Keele Street for a report of a suspicious package received at the city hall in Vaughan.

According to Staff Sergeant Dave Mitchell, the suspicious envelope appeared to contain an unknown substance inside.

Police testing of the substance has determined that it is “benign” and is not hazardous, Mitchell said.

Vaughan Fire Services hazmat team was called to the scene.

The town offices were evacuated for safety precaution, Mitchell said, adding that the building would not be reopened until it was safe to do so.

Further testing will take place to determine exactly what the substance was.
