At the most recent council meeting, a cut-off date for those looking to apply for an exemption to the Interim Control By-law was established. Interim Control By-law exemption applications will be accepted until Aug. 24, 2020 at 4:30 p.m.
What is the Interim Control Bylaw and exemption process?
The Interim Control Bylaw was established in January 2019 to put a pause on new single-lot residential construction in certain areas while the Town conducts an Established Neighbourhood Compatibility Study and updates policies in the Official Plan and Zoning Bylaw.
An Interim Control Bylaw exemption process was established in May 2019 that would allow certain developments that meet specific physical and streetscape characteristics of the neighbourhood to proceed.
What is the Established Neighbourhood Compatibility Study?
In June 2018, Town staff embarked on an Established Neighbourhood Compatibility Study. The purpose of this study is to look at how new, single lot residential dwellings could better fit into their contexts to ensure that the overall characteristics of the existing neighbourhood is maintained.
An update on the Established Neighbourhood Study will be presented to Newmarket Council at an upcoming Statutory Public Meeting on Aug. 31, 2020 at 1 p.m. As the Town is nearing completion on this study, a cut-off date for Interim Control Bylaw Exemption process was established to allow applicants enough lead time to submit an application for review, while Town staff prepares to implement new policies established as a result of the Neighbourhood Compatibility Study. Final recommendations from the study will be presented through a staff report at the October 5, 2020 Committee of the Whole meeting.
Tune in to the Statutory Public Meeting on Aug. 31, 2020 at 1 p.m. This meeting will be streamed live online at newmarket.ca/meetings as the Municipal Offices are closed to the public due to COVID-19. This meeting will also be recorded and archived online.
