Markham will be home to York Region’s first public university campus, the largest university investment in the region. We are thrilled to announce that we have made significant headway with the plan to build the York University Markham Centre Campus.
Construction on the shovel-ready project will start as early as next week with doors set to open in the Fall of 2023. This will transform post-secondary education in York Region and the GTA. Today’s announcement is the culmination of a solid partnership and significant commitments from York University, the City of Markham, York Region and private donors. The Province of Ontario supports this new campus, which makes York University the first project to comply with the province’s new university expansion framework.
The time for the York University Markham Centre Campus is now. The new campus fits perfectly with the vision we have for Markham Centre; building on Markham's highly skilled, highly educated and diverse workforce. It will support York Region’s projected population growth, the fastest growing large municipality in Ontario. It will improve provincial access to post-secondary education by meeting the growing need of students who need a more affordable education closer to home.
Markham is a key player in Ontario’s innovation corridor, and is at the centre of the second-largest tech cluster in Canada. The new campus will provide students with the necessary education, skills and training they need for the jobs of the future, further strengthening our position as a hub for innovation, while driving the prosperity of the Province. A wide range of industry-focused academic programs will be offered in the areas of digital technologies, entrepreneurship, media and communications. It will provide students with workplace-based learning opportunities while they study and local job prospects when they graduate.
The beautifully designed, state-of-the-art campus will be located in the heart of Markham Centre on Enterprise Boulevard, next to the Markham Pan Am Centre, and is a 5-minute walk to the Unionville GO station. The Campus will give students access to more than twenty degree programs, including a variety of professional programs as well as innovative joint programs with York’s academic partner, Seneca College.
All the partners remained steadfast in their commitment to see this project through. Our shared commitment to this landmark project ensured the York University Markham Campus moved from vision to reality.
This is a powerful investment in our future. The road to higher education now runs through Markham.
