Masks or face coverings will be required in common areas of condominium buildings, apartment buildings and other multi-residential buildings throughout York Region starting August 7 to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti presented the motion at York Regional council and council “strongly” endorsed that the medical officer of health, Dr. Karim Kurji, issue an instruction under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

A motion also passed to endorse Kurji to take more measures as it relates to bars, restaurants and gyms as required, which could result in more stringent criteria, Scarpitti said in a statement.

“As we continue to move toward recovery during Stage 3, there is greater opportunity for social interaction, especially in these indoor spaces that could carry a greater risk of transmission,” he said.

Scarpitti said that while most businesses are following proper protocols set by the provincial government there needs to continuous evaluation, monitoring and action to ensure public safety.

Mask use has increased throughout York Region with more than 90 per cent compliance. In Markham, at Markville Mall alone, public health officers observed a compliance rate of 97 per cent.

Scarpitti also noted that in Markham all 297 play structures are now open. Each structure has been fully inspected and all deficiencies were repaired. New signs were installed at all playgrounds with reminders to maintain physical distancing, wash and disinfect hands before and after use.

All athletic fields in Markham were also opened.

“As the economy continues to reopen, we should guard against any false sense of security. The pandemic is not over. I am proud of our collective efforts so far and ask that we keep up the good work to ensure we do not fall back while we restart the economy,” Scarpitti said
