Have you been accumulating excessive waste due to working from home? You can purchase garbage tags from the City of Richmond Hill again starting Monday.

The city’s operations centre, located at 1200 Elgin Mills Rd. E., is set to reopen on Aug. 24 for the first time in more than five months.

The facility will be open for the purchases and exchanges of blue boxes, green bins, kitchen catchers and garbage tags only.

As a result, the garbage limit will return to three items beginning Monday, Sept. 21. If you have more than three items, you must use garbage tags for extra items to be collected.

Garbage tags will be available only at the operations centre.

Blue boxes (recycling) and green bins (organics) are available at the operations centre and the main municipal offices at 225 East BeaverCreek Rd., ground floor.

No appointment is required at this time and a staff member will greet you at the door of the operations centre.

An exchange fee of $7.35 (plus HST) -- new this year -- will apply for replacement of damaged or broken Richmond Hill branded blue boxes and green bins to help offset replacement costs.

If you are exchanging bins, the staff member will take your old bin.

If it is a Richmond Hill branded bin, you will receive a ticket to bring inside to the counter. If it is not a Richmond Hill branded bin, you will need to purchase a new one.

The centre accepts payment via Interac, Visa or MasterCard. Cash will not be accepted.

The facility will open between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.; between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and between 2 and 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Only two people will be allowed at a time to allow for physical distancing and anyone entering the building will be required to wear a mask or face covering.
