Construction continues on the region's force main twinning project. In less than a year, microtunnelling is complete, spanning more than five kilometres from Bayview Parkway to just north of St. John's Sideroad. Crews are now installing sewage pipes inside the concrete tunnels. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2021. Aug. 10, 2020 - Steve Somerville/Torstar
The region recently completed one of the longest, curved microtunnel drives in North America
JUST THE FACTS:
- Construction started in 2019 and will continue until the end of 2021;
- The new force main will span more than five kilometres from Bayview Parkway to just north of St. John’s Sideroad and includes 10 construction zones;
- Cane Parkway is reduced to one lane in both directions during construction;
- Seven microtunnelling drives are complete as part of the force main installation at the Bogart Creek pumping station;
- Remaining work includes installing sewage pipes inside the underground concrete tunnels, chamber construction, mechanical and electrical work, system testing and road restoration;
- Chamber construction involves closing the huge shafts and converting them into maintenance holes for future access;
- Once complete, the region will plant four native trees for every tree removed during construction -- planting 79 trees and 20 shrubs at the Queen and Charles streets location and 63 trees and 150 shrubs at the Bayview Parkway location;
- The total budget for the project is about $119 million and is funded in part by Infrastructure Canada.
