For the second time in as many months, a statue of a former prime minister has been vandalized.

On Sunday, the statue of Pierre Trudeau -- installed in the eponymous park on Clark Ave. in Thornhill -- was defaced with white spraypaint, with the word ‘pedo’ scrawled on its plinth.

Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua said in a statement that he was disappointed at this latest act of vandalism, and that it doesn’t reflect the values of his city.

“The former prime minister created opportunities for Canadians and newcomers so that we may all live peacefully and free from discrimination,” he wrote.

“These values must continue to be reflected in our city and country as we continue to build a fair, just and compassionate society.”

The paint was cleaned from the statue by Sunday evening, and York Regional Police are investigating.

This is the second time in recent months the statue has been vandalized.

In June, the statue’s face was covered in black spray paint in what York police considered a ‘hate crime.’
