It's "shovels in the ground" for Aurora's newest elementary school, according to Deputy Premier and Newmarket-Aurora MPP Christine Elliott.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce joined the local MPP, Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas and York Region District School Board education director Louise Sirisko and board representatives on Monday, Aug. 10 to mark last week's announcement from the Ontario government that $500 million would go toward building 30 new schools and upgrading 15 existing facilities across the province.

The $15-million new school, located in the St. John’s Forest and Aurora Trail neighbourhood at St. John's Sideroad and Leslie Street, is slated to open in September 2024.

On the southwest corner of Hartwell Way and William Graham Drive, the school will be built to accommodate 638 students and will also offer 39 child care spaces to the community in two rooms.

"This will help to ensure that students and teachers have access to a modern classroom and provide parents with more convenient child care options," Elliott said.
