As of 1 p.m. July 7, the Town of Newmarket opened a temporary cooling facility, located in the Magna Centre (800 Mulock Dr.) east entrance lobby to assist those who need to escape the heat. The cooling facility will remain open as long as the York Region heat warning is in effect. The general hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please note that the rest of the building will not be open to the public.

Residents who are using the cooling facility must follow public health guidelines by practising proper hand hygiene and staying at least six feet/two metres. away from others using the facility (physical distancing).

Residents will be screened by staff when they arrive and asked to sanitize their hands and wear a mask/face covering before entering. Disposable masks will be provided for those who do not have their own.

Residents who wish to use the cooling station are also asked to self-assess their health before arriving at the cooling station. Those who have any of the symptoms of COVID-19 (noted below) are asked to refrain from entering the building and to seek assessment and testing as early as possible at Newmarket’s COVID-19 assessment centre at Southlake Regional Health Centre (596 Davis Dr.). It is also important for the resident and any close contacts to self-isolate for 14 days.
