In a show of his firm stance, Markham’s Mayor Frank Scarpitti has reminded people in a tweet that a report on mandating masks is going to be presented at a July 9 York Region Council meeting.
“My motion is being dealt with at a Special Regional Council Meeting on July 9th,” Scarpitti said in a tweet published July 3, a day after masks were made mandatory on York Region Transit.
“We would have been the first major jurisdiction in GTA to approve mandatory masks last week but some members of Regional Council wanted more information which I respect,” he said.
On June 25, Scarpitti introduced a motion at York Region Council to make masks mandatory.
“We cannot afford to let our guard down until a vaccine is found. As the economy continues to reopen. The pandemic is not over and the threat of a second wave is a real possibility,” he has previously tweeted after introducing his motion.
Even earlier, Scarpitti called on the province to make wearing masks mandatory in enclosed indoor spaces where physical distancing is not possible.
The mayor deems masks wearing as a responsible public health response and a wise economic decision.
