Over the next two months, the Town of Newmarket will reopen select facilities, including the Magna Centre fitness centre and Recreation Youth Centre and Sk8 Park.

Staff are also working on a reopening schedule for certain indoor programs with strict health and safety measures in place to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

In early August, one ice pad is expected to be open at the Magna Centre for permit holders only, according to the town.

Following that in mid-August, the Recreation Youth Centre and Sk8 Park is set to reopen for free use at set times.

Also in mid-August, the fitness centre at the Magna Centre will reopen by appointment only. The fitness centre will be moved to one of the ice pads to ensure room for guests to physically distance.

By the end of August, the Magna gymnasium will reopen by registration only, followed by the Magna pool reopening mid-September.

The recently renovated NewRoads Performing Arts Centre is expected to reopen mid-September and be available for small group rentals that adhere to the Ontario government’s COVID-19 restrictions of no more than 50 people at an indoor space.

Large bookings and performances will not resume at the arts centre until 2021.

All Newmarket’s nearly 50 playgrounds will reopen by Saturday, Aug. 1.

Signage at the playgrounds will be updated this week and fencing and caution tape will be removed. Residents are asked to be patient and to not remove caution tape or barriers before playgrounds are inspected for safety and have officially reopened.

The town’s park ambassadors will be visiting local parks and playgrounds this weekend to educate residents and remind them of physical distancing measures and other safety precautions to keep everyone safe during the pandemic.

Here are some reminders to enjoy the town’s amenities safely:

The town continues to monitor the changing COVID-19 landscape and will seek guidance from the Ontario government as it reopens more amenities cautiously.
