Aurora is getting a new elementary school, Newmarket-Aurora MPP Christine Elliott has announced.
The new $15-million school will be built at the southwest corner of Hartwell Way and William Graham Drive in the fast-developing area of St. John’s Sideroad and Leslie Street. It is expected to open in September 2024.
“The funding for this new school is great news for our community,” Elliott said in a statement July 24.
“This investment will provide a quality learning environment and new opportunities for the children of Aurora. Built-in child-care spaces in elementary schools will also benefit parents by making access to these services more convenient.”
The as-yet unnamed school will be built to accommodate 638 students. It will house 39 child-care spaces and two child-care rooms.
The project is part of a provincial government investment of more than $500 million to build 30 new schools and upgrade 15 existing facilities across the province.
“From modernizing our curriculum to revitalizing our classrooms and their facilities, we are investing in our students and giving them every tool to achieve their full potential,” Education Minister Stephen Lecce said.
“Our financing of the new unnamed elementary school in Aurora further demonstrates our government’s historic investment in Ontario’s schools and our overall commitment to supporting our students and families.”
York Region District School Board director Louise Sirisko welcomed the announcement.
