Seniors in York Region now have a safer, more convenient option to get around the area during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
York Region Transit launched a pilot project July 13 to offer on-request transit service in July and August for residents 65 and older who feel hesitant taking regular public transit travel for their basic needs.
While COVID-19 has posed challenges for us all, older adults have to think twice before setting foot out of their houses because they face an elevated risk from the virus.
The on-request service, which uses smaller vehicles such as sedans, minivans and small buses that are thoroughly cleaned, with drivers equipped with proper personal protective equipment, according to a news update published on YRT's website.
There is a limit to the number of passengers allowed in the vehicles at the same time.
The service is available in select areas in Georgina, East Gwillimbury, Newmarket, Aurora and Richmond Hill. Detailed information can be found on the website.
A senior resident within the service area can request a ride on the same day by calling the service at 1-866-744-1119 from 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on weekdays, from July 13 to Aug. 31.
A vehicle will pick the residents up at the door and take them to the desired locations within 5 km of their homes, such as a grocery store, doctor’s office, and pharmacy.
Senior fare is $2.40 with PRESTO or the YRT Pay app. Cash fare is $4.25.
For the safety of the drivers and travellers, all customers are screened by YRT's contact centre staff with COVID-19 questions before booking a trip.
All passengers are mandated to wear a non-medical face mask or covering on public transit.
