To support local businesses amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Vaughan announved June 2 that it has suspended the Municipal Accommodation Tax to Sept. 1.
Upon declaring a state of emergency on March 17, council suspended MAT to June 1.
This is to “support the travel and tourism industry by not requiring accommodation providers to charge the MAT at Vaughan properties,” according to a City media release.
Suspending MAT is part of the City’s measures in the Vaughan Business Action Plan “designed to safeguard the local economy and protect businesses, consumers and all citizens.”
Vaughan approved a 4 per cent MAT on hotels, lodges, bed and breakfasts and motels, effective April 1, 2019, as a dedicated source of funding for tourism marketing and promotion.
