The Town of Newmarket continues to slowly open up for fun in open spaces, but do not expect to play any organized games yet.

While organized leagues and programs remain sidelined, the municipality announced it intends to open most sports fields and diamonds by June 5.

The openings, announced June 3, comply with guidelines for a gradual approach to reopening by Newmarket officials. The process initiated in late May with the opening of some amenities, including pickleball and tennis courts, walking trails, the dog park and other open spaces.

Despite opening of fields, use is limited to recreational activities. No permits will be issued for organized sports, leagues or games.

Maintenance measures for facilities will be limited for an indefinite period as reduced staff addresses 45 parks and open spaces and more than 800 acres of community parkland.

Whipper Watson Park and Fairgrounds diamonds will not be open. The turf field at Dr. J.M. Denison Secondary School will also remain closed.

Other amenities still closed indefinitely are basketball courts, splash pads, outdoor water features, fitness equipment and public washrooms.

Town buildings and facilities, including the public library, remain closed.

The town also advises users to observe provincial emergency orders guidelines and observe physical distancing protocols.
