On July 1, the City of Markham will unveil the country’s first virtual drone show --as part of its day-long virtual Canada Day celebrations.

"It’s a point of pride when we come together as a community, joining Canadians from coast to coast to coast to celebrate our nation’s birthday,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “This year we are doing things differently, but in true Markham style, we are celebrating in a big way. This one of a kind show is another innovative way to show our pride and love for this country, all while staying safe and still connected as one, united community --Canada’s most diverse community!”

Delight in watching the grace and precision of 90 drones taking flight to form animated images in the night sky that celebrate Canada and Markham.

To produce this first-of-its-kind virtual drone show, the City of Markham worked closely with North Star Drone Shows, to storyboard, design, program and film the video. The show was designed using 3D modelling software and each drone was programmed using algorithms to ensure accurate positioning and altitude to ensure when in the air each drone would collectively contribute to creating each specific pattern in the sky. Four cameras were used to film the video - including a drone camera for aerial shots. Each of the 90 drones were individually programmed to fly a different flight path at a pre-determined speed, and each one communicated with ground control and a network of satellites.

“We’re excited to bring this virtual drone show to the entire Markham community,” says Canada Day Organizing Committee Chair, Councillor Amanda Collucci. “You’ll be able to enjoy this video from the comfort of your own home as we all celebrate our nation’s 153rd birthday together online. Watch carefully because you just might recognize some familiar illustrations!”

“North Star is proud to offer drone light shows as of this year, and we’re thrilled the City of Markham is the first in Canada to use this new entertainment medium virtually,” says Jeff Clarmo, CEO, North Star Fireworks Entertainment. “These shows will no doubt continue taking the entertainment industry by storm and we look forward to showcasing a glimpse of Markham through this unique and exciting show.”

Markham’s virtual drone show will be shared online on Canada Day on July 1. We hope you will tune in to watch at markham.ca/CanadaDay.

In addition to the custom-made virtual drone spectacle, Markham is pleased to also announce the release of its ‘O Canada’ community compilation video to mark the 40th anniversary of Canada’s national anthem. This montage of community members singing ‘O Canada’ together - while apart - features audio and video clips submitted by Markham families, friends and familiar faces that reflect our diversity and collective joy for Canada.
