The City of Vaughan has announced plans to move its Canada Day celebration online this year, with Ontario's Barenaked Ladies headlining the July event.

Taking place on July 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET, the York Region virtual celebration with feature performances and appearances by local artists, dance groups and other entertainers, including the Mini Pop Kids, Toronto's the Free Label, Kreative in Dance Styles, comedian Susan Stewart, and the Spin Starlets with violinist Dr. Draw.

Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua has released a statement on the decision to move the event online this year in keeping with COVID-19 precautions.

He wrote:

I invite all Vaughan residents to join us in marking an incredible milestone in our city's history as we celebrate the first-ever virtual Canada Day event. Since we cannot gather physically, we have taken this as an opportunity to provide a unique way of celebrating together, virtually -- and we have a remarkable lineup of entertainment for everyone to enjoy -- including Juno Award-winning Canadian superstars, Barenaked Ladies. The City of Vaughan's virtual Canada Day event is a reminder that what keeps us connected are the Canadian values we hold dear to us -- diversity, fairness and freedom of speech. Canada Day is about demonstrating our love, appreciation and gratitude for living in the best city -- and the best country -- in the world. May we reflect on our shared commitment to democracy, equality and mutual respect. No matter where you were born, if you call Canada home, you are part of the Canadian family.

Viewers are encouraged to participate in the event's online community by using the hashtag #VaughanCanadaDay2020 on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Tune into the City of Vaughn's website on July 1 to participate in the festivities.
