Region waives property tax interest for 90 days due to pandemic

As a local muncipalities struggle with the financial hardships brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, York Regional council is providing them with greater flexibility in paying their regional property tax instalments.

York Region is owed $1.189 billion from cities and towns in 2020, payable in four instalments. York Region will waive interest until Jan. 1, 2021 on any portion of 2020 property tax instalments not remitted to the region as a direct result of a local municipality’s COVID-19 response, according to a region council newsletter.

Municipalities will be responsible for interest related to the final 2020 property tax instalment, which will be waived until March 31, 2021.

Any taxes collected on behalf of York Region would continue to be remitted according to the existing schedule.
