George McKelvey served as Markham Ward 4 councillor for 12 years, from 1994 to 2006.
Flags were lowered at all City of Markham facilities April 3 in memory of former councillor George McKelvey.
McKelvey served as Ward 4 councillor for 12 years, from 1994-2006.
"On behalf of everyone at the City of Markham, we offer our deepest condolences to his wife, Dorothy, his family, friends and colleagues," said Mayor Frank Scarpitti.
"George was a dedicated public servant and community leader who made a difference in the lives of many and was well respected among his colleagues on Markham Council."
McKelvey served on several committees and in various roles, including as chair and vice-chair of the Development Services Committee, vice-chair of the Recreation and Culture Committee, co-chair of the Main St. Markham Committee, a member of the Works Committee, the Fire and Emergency Services Committee and the Markham Conservation Committee.
He was also a strong supporter of Markham’s initiative to honour veterans by placing poppies on street signs.
"George was a wonderful colleague and friend," former councillor Alex Chiu posted on social media. "The world has lost a great man."
Scarpitti said McKelvey continued to inspire others as the principal at James Robinson Public School and as an active member of the Markham Lions Club.
"We thank him for contributing to Markham’s growth and success and we appreciate his contributions on Markham Council," Scarpitti said.
"He had a deep appreciation for everyone he worked with at the City of Markham and enjoyed his time collaborating with them on various issues. He will be missed."
