Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua has ordered flags to be lowered after a gunman disguised as a police officer killed at least 19 people, including a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, in Nova Scotia.
"I have requested that flags at City of Vaughan facilities be lowered to half-mast in memory of the victims of the recent shootings in Portapique, Nova Scotia," Bevilacqua said April 19.
"The City of Vaughan joins communities in Nova Scotia and across Canada in mourning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ friends and families,” he added.
The incident is the deadliest mass killing in Canada's modern history. It started late Saturday and ended with a car chase after a 12-hour rampage.
"Tragedies like these remind us of the courage, commitment and strength first-responders demonstrate each day," Bevilacqua said. "We are grateful for their unflinching bravery and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice so that people can be safe."
