The coronavirus crisis has prompted Newmarket to cancel all its recreation and culture programs, drop-in programs, rentals and events until further notice.

The town made the decision after the provincial government announced this week that schools will remain closed until May 4 to try to control the spread of COVID-19.

The news comes as Toronto announced all its festivals and events, including the Pride parade, will be cancelled until June 30.

Newmarket staff is working to credit the accounts of people who registered for spring recreation and culture programs and other town activities. For more information, email registration@newmarket.ca.

The town is reminding residents to practise safe physical distancing.

That means limiting the number of people you come in close contact with. The province is prohibiting gatherings of more than five people, a rule that does not apply to households of more than five people and other strict exemptions.

Limit your trips outdoors to essentials only, such as health care needs, groceries, work and exercise. If you must go outside, stay at least 1.8 metres or six feet apart from other people.
