With everyone spending most of their time at home, Newmarket has announced it is relaxing its rules about garbage pickup.

Beginning this week, each household will be able to put out five bags of trash every two weeks.

The town is asking residents to stick to the existing three bag limit if possible and not to produce unnecessary waste.

Citizens may continue to use green bins and recycling bins as usual.

the green bin. Do not flush these items in the toilet as this will cause sewer blockages which may lead to sewer blockages. Sewer blockages are the responsibility of the homeowner.

Hold off the disposable of large items until regular garbage collection resumes.

If needed, residents can take large items to York Region waste depots. Fees apply. For more information, visit york.ca/wastedepots.

Or call the town at 905-895-5193 for a tag, which will be sent by mail.

Newmarket’s textile recycling program outside of town facilities will temporarily be suspended until further notice. Diabetes Canada will be placing signage on all textile recycling bins located outside of the Magna Centre, Ray Twinney Recreation Centre and the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall. They will also be monitoring the bins periodically to ensure the area around the bins are maintained. For more information, visitnewmarket.ca/textilerecycling.
