Georgina decided to close all town parks effectively immediately March 23 to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The facilities, including the two skateboard parks, will remain closed until further notice, according to a news release from the office of the CAO.

The announcement came after crowds of visitors were spotted at local parks across the GTA over the weekend, raising concerns over the further spread of the novel coronavirus.

Notices will be posted at Georgina's parks, the news release says.

York Region Public Health has reported 63 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, including one death, as of March 23. There have been no confirmed cases in Georgina so far.

The town announced the decision shortly after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned there is no tolerance for those flouting orders to socially distance from others.

"You all think you’re invincible," Trudeau said from in front of Rideau Cottage, where he remains in self-isolation. "You’re not. Enough is enough."

On March 19, Georgina Mayor Margaret Quirk issued a declaration of emergency.

The town’s emergency operations centre has been activated and town services have been adjusted to ensure the safety of residents and town staff.
