After unleashing its action plan to keep business running amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Vaughan announced March 19 that it’s waiving the late penalty charge on interim tax bills effective immediately.

"Payments for the March 26, April 27 and May 27 due dates will not be subject to any late payment fee or interest until June 1," a written statement from the city reads. "Further extensions may be granted thereafter."

So far, Vaughan’s City Hall remains closed.

"There are several ways property owners can make payments remotely. These include pre-authorized programs, online and telephone banking, issuing postdated cheques or by mail. Please consult with your financial institution to determine whether a payment can be made at a branch location."

Elderly homeowners get some help

The city also said it's offering its Elderly Home-Owners Tax Assistance program for 2020 -- which is a tax credit in the amount of $377 provided by the city to elderly homeowners who qualify.

The deadline for the Elderly Home-Owners Tax Assistance program has been extended to April 30.

The City also continues to operate its Seniors, Low-Income Seniors and Low-Income Disabled Persons Property Tax Deferral program. The deadline for this program remains Sept. 30.

"These new measures apply to residential and non-residential properties," the city said. "They further mark the latest efforts by the City to aid the small business community."

The decision came after the City of Vaughan announced on Tuesday a slew of "temporary" measures it dubbed as the Vaughan Business Action plan, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua announced during a special council meeting.
