The possibility of deferring property tax payments during the coronavirus period will be one of the issues Newmarket council discusses at an emergency meeting on March 18, the town has announced.

Council will hold a special council meeting at 2 p.m., followed by an emergency council meeting at 3 p.m.

The emergency council meeting will deal with council matters related to the changing landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic, a statement from the town released the afternoon of March 17 said.

COVID-19 is cause by a coronavirus.

A draft agenda is available at newmarket.ca/meetings.

As the town hall is now closed to the public, residents can watch the meeting online at newmarket.ca/meetings. A video link will be available 15 minutes before the meeting is expected to start.

Residents who wish to submit comments, which will be part of the public record, can email the town clerk at clerk@newmarket.ca.

"As we all know this is a challenging time for all as we deal with the impact of COVID-19," Mayor John Taylor said in the meeting announcement. "I want to let all residents of Newmarket know that the town is continuing to look for ways to support our community during these trying times.

"At this emergency council meeting, council will be making decisions on property tax deferral, financial support for community groups like the Newmarket Food Pantry, and how we can continue to provide essential services to our community, while we continue to follow the federal government and the Province of Ontario’s direction around social distancing."

As issues continue to evolve, the Town will keep residents updated through its website newmarket.ca/covid19, social media channels (Twitter: @TownofNewmarket and Facebook: @TownofNewmarket) and through local media.
