Mackenzie Health Foundation announced on Monday, March 2 that it received a $5-million joint gift from Promenade Shopping Centre partners Liberty Development Corporation and the Serruya family to help build and equip the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital.

This gift will be recognized by naming the hospital’s main corridor “Main Street.”

When the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital opens its doors, patients and visitors will travel through the 444 square-foot-long internal Main Street to access many areas of the hospital --including the main elevator bank, Patient Registration, Magna Emergency Department, Medical Imaging, the Vic de Zen Family Welcome Centre, Spiritual Care Centre, and a variety of public spaces, including dining and retail.

The donation comes after the hospital received $3 million from two local donors, spelling out a strong start for its final completion, expected in late 2020.

“The Liberty Development Corporation and Serruya Family gift helps further Mackenzie Health’s commitment to creating positive patient experiences, right from the moment patients enter our doors. The Main Street will be a central space for patients, staff and visitors and will be bright, inviting and fully accessible. We’re grateful for the support and look forward to a continued relationship,” said Altaf Stationwala, president and CEO of Mackenzie Health.

Liberty Development Corporation says it has been supporting Mackenzie Health for more than 18 years.

“On behalf of our partners and team at Liberty Development Corporation, we’re proud to support the Ultimate campaign and Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, and this is just the beginning,” said Fred Darvish, president of Liberty Development Corporation. “We look forward to growing our commitment and continuing our philanthropic journey with Mackenzie Health.”

Mackenzie Health Foundation also said it was pleased to welcome the Serruya family as first-time donors.

“Supporting the health and wellness of our community has always been important to all of us,” said Michael Serruya. “We are thrilled to be part of bringing the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital to York Region.”

The 1.2 million-square-foot hospital will provide 350 patient beds, with the ability to increase capacity to 550 beds.

“This generous gift toward Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital helps bring the ultimate health-care experience to our community. We are grateful to the leadership of Liberty Development Corporation and the Serruya family, as we continue to build upon our community’s inspiration and generosity and ensure the success of the Ultimate campaign,” said Krista Finlay, Mackenzie Health Foundation president.
