Vaughan's Andrew Wiggins on move to Golden State Warriors

Trade deadline move sends former No. 1 pick to Bay Area

Former NBA top draft pick Andrew Wiggins has been traded to the Golden State Warriors.

The 24-year-old Vaughan native and graduate of Vaughan Secondary School was dealt in the early afternoon of Feb. 6 and just hours before the league’s trade deadline.

Wiggins, who was the first overall pick in the 2014 draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2014, spent his entire four-and-a-half year career with Minnesota.

Two 2021 draft picks are also headed to San Francisco along with Wiggins.

In return, D’Angelo Russell, Jacob Evans and Omari Spellman are on the move to Minnesota.

Wiggins is in the second year of a five-year max contract with $94 million remaining in his deal.

This season, Wiggins has averaged 22.4 points in 34.6 minutes per game. He has 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

All were second on the Minnesota squad which is destined to miss the playoffs.
