Almost 200 more homes proposed for Newmarket's former Glenway Golf Course

Residents can give opinions on proposed development at Feb. 3 meeting

Residents can give their opinions on a developer’s bid to build almost 200 homes on the remaining Glenway Golf Course lands at a town planning meeting Feb. 3.

Marianneville Developments Limited is hoping to build 193 homes, including 97 detached houses and 96 townhouses on the western half of the former golf course.

The homes come in addition to 742 houses in the first phase of the development, which was approved following an acrimonious fight that ended up at the Ontario Municipal Board six years ago.

A 2014 report revealed the town spent almost $700,000 in a losing bid to prevent development on the former golf lands.

Many residents remain upset, Coun. Christina Bisanz said.

“There’s still considerable regret for the loss of the green space,” she said.

“Of course, we have always wanted to maintain as much green space as possible and a portion of the Glenway West lands have been donated to the town. That was announced a couple of years ago. There are sections that will remain as parkland and green space for public use -- (but) I think we’re sort of resigned to the fact that the land will be developed.”

Bisanz wants several issues to be addressed as the development application moves forward, including density, ensuring the homes blend in with existing surrounding houses, parking, the impact on traffic, the implementation of a construction management plan to reduce the disruption to neighbours, and consideration of housing that accommodates the aging population.

The planning meeting will be held Feb. 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the town hall at 395 Mulock Dr.
