With Ontario reporting a new presumptive case of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) over the weekend after having all of its previous first three cases fully cleared, news surfaced of how Asian businesses are affected.

On Jan. 31, York Region reported how a restaurant called Wuhan Noodle in Markham experienced racism during the early incidents of the virus in Ontario. After reporting the unfortunate news, the situation improved for the restaurant when people -- including Markham’s mayor -- showed their support by visiting Wuhan Noodle.

To show further support for local Asian businesses, Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Ward 4 Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco joined Catherine Hou, president of the Chinese Cuisine & Hospitality Association of Canada, to enjoy some scrumptious food at Kuu Sushi on Sunday.

“Local business owners and entrepreneurs are our neighbours, our friends and our family,” said Bevilacqua. “In good times and in challenging times, we must continue to advocate for their success to ensure Vaughan’s economy remains strong and prosperous."

“Our city is blessed with compassionate and generous citizens who are willing to lend a hand to help others in need. Your unwavering support for small businesses will make a positive and meaningful impact in our community,” he added.

York Region Public Health is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with provincial and national health agencies and reports that the risk of acquiring the virus in the community remains low for York Region residents.
