City of Brampton makes donation in support of Ukraine crash victims

Canadians across the country mourned the victims of the tragic Ukrainian International Airlines crash that occurred on January 8, 2020.

The Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 crash, which took place in Shahedshahr, just southwest of the Iranian capital, Tehran, claimed the lives of 176 people and 63 Canadians.

Among these Canadians, was Elsa Jadidi, who went to school at Wali ul Asr in Brampton up until last year.

To honour the victims, flags at Brampton City Hall were flown at half-mast to honour those who lost their lives in the crash near Tehran, Iran.

The flags were also hung to honour members of the community from the Wali Ul Asr School who were on the plane.

On February 19, 2020, Brampton City Council made a contribution of $25,000 to the “Canada Strong” a campaign launched by Mohamad Fakih, President of Paramount Fine Foods and Founder of the Fakih Foundation, to collect funds for the victims of Flight 752.

On January 22, 2020, the Government of Canada announced that it would be matching funds donated to the Canada Strong fund. Their ledge will match donations to the fund up to $1.5 million, to provide longer-term support for the families of the victims.

With pro bono oversight from Dentons Canada LLP and support from the City of Toronto, all donations will flow-through Toronto Foundation to benefit those affected.
