Over the last several years--both while Vaughan Metropolitan Centre subway station was under construction and since its opening in late 2017--a flurry of construction has taken place surrounding this new transit hub.

One of the largest developments is Transit City at SmartCentres Place, a 100-acre master planned community by SmartCentres, CentreCourt, and SmartREIT. With towers 1 and 2 of this this multi-tower development nearing completion, and tower 3 rising steadily, Transit City Condos 4 and 5 began constriction in late 2019. In addition to those two most recent condo towers--to rise 50 and 45-stories respectively--the new phase also includes a 36-storey purpose-built rental building, which officially broke ground last week. The three-tower development will also include a one-acre park, and 25,000 square feet of amenity space.

“When you’re building a downtown core from a clean slate it’s important to understand that cities are the result of the various human interactions that occur,” said Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, who attended the groundbreaking. “There’s the physical side of a city and the spiritual side, and they both need to be in perfect harmony. So, green space and the ability to have amenities available are both important to ensuring we’re building a complete city.”

The three new towers, designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects, will be adjacent to the TTC subway station, and will add more than 1,500 new units to the quickly growing area, of which 429 will be in the purpose-built rental building. TC4 will add 566 condo units, and an additional 565 condo units will be added in TC5.

“By 2031, the VMC will be home to more than 25,000 people living in a projected 12,000 units,” added Mayor Bevilacqua. “With several new projects on the horizon, including condominium developments that will play an important role in meeting future density goals, finding a complete range of housing options for our growing community remains a priority.”
