An electric bus charging station is among the York Region Transit Newmarket bus terminal upgrades currently underway.
Just the facts:
- Location: Newmarket YRT bus terminal, 320 Eagle St. W.
- York Region officially took ownership of the Newmarket bus terminal Feb. 1;
- Construction on the new YRT electric bus charging station started in December 2019 and is expected to be completed by the end of the month. Future bus terminal improvements will be phased in throughout 2020-21;
- The $8-million electric bus pilot project is expected to kick off later this year, which includes six electric buses;
- Newmarket-Tay Power Distribution Ltd. will operate and maintain one 450-kilowatt overhead bus charging station at the rebranded YRT Newmarket bus terminal;
- Other bus terminal upgrades, which will be phased in, include terminal and parking lot lighting upgrades; signage and way-finding improvements; refreshing benches, waste bins and public washrooms; building a designated smoking area; increased cleaning services and YRT enforcement presence as well as parking lot paving and platform and roadway rehabilitation;
The budget to upgrade the bus facility to York Region Transit standards has been set at about $71,000.
