WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? Revitalization of Markham's oldest formal park

Morgan Pool project expected to be completed by Summer 2020

The City of Markham is revitalizing Morgan Pool, a seasonal swimming facility with an outdoor pool in the Markham Village conservation district.

JUST THE FACTS

Location: The facility --at the north end of Morgan Park (the oldest formal park in Markham) --is located at 11 Parkway Ave., on the southeast corner of Parkway Avenue and George Street.

Timeline: Construction began in the Fall 2019, shortly after the summer swimming season ended. The revitalization is expected to be completed by Summer 2020 and the pool reopened for the 2020 Summer swimming season.

Construction work includes:

• A new barrier-free building that will replace the existing structures at Morgan Pool; be compatible with and complementary to the existing heritage properties in the district; house a staff office, reception area, universal change room, mechanical room and storage area, plus washrooms; and feature wide hallways, power doors, braille and Tactile Walking Surface Indicator (TWSI) for accessibility;

• A new splash pad to replace the existing wading pool;

• A new parking lot and driveway for passenger pick-up and drop-off;

• Two new park washrooms; and

• A new pool transfer lift that will be added to the existing outdoor swimming pool for accessibility.
