Traffic control signals at 16th Avenue and Berwick Crescent in Richmond Hill are being replaced and upgraded to meet Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements.

JUST THE FACTS

COST: The intersection upgrades will cost around $300,000.

TIMING: Construction began in December 2019 and will be completed in spring 2020.

CHANGES: To a motorist, the traffic signals will appear the same. The changes to meet AODA requirements will affect pedestrians. The standard push buttons will be replaced with audible pedestrian signals and tactile walking surface indicators will be embedded into the concrete ramps.

PROJECT UPDATE: The permanent signal will be built in the new year, weather permitting. Additional construction taking place in spring 2020 includes upgrading the intersection to meet AODA requirements with curb work and paving.

WHY IS THE WORK NECESSARY: The traffic signal was installed in 1994 and the equipment must be replaced. Also, a pedestrian crosswalk to the east side of the intersection will be added.
