The province is providing the Town of Newmarket close to $1.6 million to help build and repair its roads, bridges, and stormwater and wastewater infrastructure.

The funds -- $1,595,136 to be exact -- are allocated under the Ontario Community Investment Fund, part of $200 million going to 424 communities in the province this year, according to Newmarket-Aurora MPP Christine Elliott.

The Town has yet to determine which 2020 projects will benefit from the funding, according to Peter Noehammer, commissioner of infrastructure and development services.

The Town has used the funds in previous years for road surfacing and capital projects like the Patterson watermain replacement project, he added.

Neighbouring Aurora is to receive close to $1.2 million for its core infrastructure projects and asset management planning needs in 2020.

“As your MPP, I am upholding my commitment to support our local municipalities by creating jobs, attracting economic growth and investment, and making our community the best place to live and grow,” said Elliott. “This funding will help build and repair roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure in our community.”

The province uses a formula that examines various social and economic factors to determine funding allocations, which are provided in quarterly instalments, to communities with populations under 100,000, along with all rural and northern communities.
