A social media video shared by 6ixBuzzTV Tuesday recorded a snowplow operator smashing through garbage bins residents left on the curb in Mississauga.

Municipal works officials identified and confirmed the street is in Mississauga and the snowplow in the video belongs to one of the city’s contractors.

“The driving behaviour in the subject video is unacceptable to the city,” a City of Mississauga spokesman told the Toronto Sun.

“Snowplow operators are required to avoid recycling/garbage bins, and to operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and professional manner,” the spokesman added.

It’s unclear from the video whether or not the bins were placed incorrectly on the road. The spokesman added the city will replace the bins if they were broken.

“The city will work with the residents and the region and replace any damaged bins. The cost to replace any damaged bins will be borne by the contractor.”

The viral video had more than 300,000 views.

The spokesman said there could be ramifications for what happened.

“City staff would be subject to discipline, up to and including dismissal,” the spokesman  said, adding: “City contractors would be fined (liquidated damages) and the contractor’s operator would be removed from the contracted service.”

However, according to the city’s website, the municipality is “not responsible for damage to plants, driveway curbs or other private items placed within the city road allowance.”

The city’s website also states it is responsible for salting and clearing snow from 5,600 kilometres of roads, 1,600 kilometres of sidewalks, 3,400 bus stops, and 95 kilometres of roadside trails.
