The Town of Newmarket is excited to launch its inground waste container pilot project in the Main Street downtown area. The two inground waste containers, located in the Timothy / Cedar Street area, will assist businesses with the disposal of commercial waste.
The containers are managed by the Town, and are available for use by interested businesses through an agreement. Costs will be shared among participating businesses.
“As Newmarket’s downtown area continues to see economic success, with a thriving restaurant and shopping district, engaging programming and year-round activities for everyone to enjoy, it is important that we work with businesses and residents in the area to support their needs.” says Mayor John Taylor. “The inground waste container pilot project will assist businesses in the area manage commercial waste, while improving the overall appearance and cleanliness of the downtown area.”
The inground waste containers are made of recyclable, durable plastic and because storage is set into the ground, they increase waste capacity and reduce odours. For improved safety, the doors are latched and locked securely at all times which also eliminates wind and pest disturbances.
Two parking spots in the P7 parking lot on Timothy Street were used to accommodate the inground waste containers. One of Council’s Strategic Priorities is to add additional parking in the downtown area and, as such, the Town is working closely with the Newmarket Main Street District Business Improvement Area (BIA) to identify short and long-term opportunities.
As part of further work in the area, the Town will also be grading and repaving the area in the spring. This project is partly being funded by a Main Street Revitalization Grant provided by the Province of Ontario.
The Town is preparing a waste management strategy and a full audit of the downtown’s current waste management program. Data gathered from the inground waste systems will help inform the audit and the overall strategy to improve current waste disposal methods. An expansion of the pilot project throughout the downtown area will be investigated as one of many solutions to managing waste within this study area.
Newmarket is committed to continuing to work with the BIA Board and businesses in the downtown core to develop best practices that will enhance the economic and social vibrancy of Main Street Newmarket.
