During the recent IDI Toronto media launch of the nomination process for Public Heroes Awards, a “future public hero” was also recognized. IDI (Intercultural Dialogue Institute) recognizes outstanding performance through participation in volunteer, co-op education, or cadet programs in first responder services, and Canadian Armed Forces. This year, nine youth across the GTA were recognized and Vaughan’s recipient was Shakira Rodriguez. Shakira has initiated and organized holiday toy drives for Sick Kids Hospital, the Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service, and for a local shelter. She regularly volunteers with food drives to help the Vaughan Food Bank and earlier this year, Shakira organized and led a social justice project with her entire grade 8 class to raise awareness and money for homelessness. She’s served at her school as a Social Justice and Spirit Council member and helped raise over $1300 for Angel Hair. Congratulations Shakira!
