Tobogganing is a quintessential Canadian winter pastime, but some municipalities have banned it while others, including some in York Region, have imposed restrictions on where you can sled. Don’t fret though, there are still places you can race down a hill.
Here are five spots worth visiting:
Aurora Family Leisure Complex/ Lambert Willson Park, Aurora
The town limits tobogganing to four locations and this is a prime spot. Tobogganers enjoying the unsupervised hills in this area, 135 Industrial Pky. N., must use the dedicated area along the east side of the complex building at their own risk. There’s on-site parking and washrooms inside the recreation centre.
Dennis Park, Newmarket
This large park, on Cane Parkway just north of Mulock Drive, is a popular spot for tobogganers. The town doesn’t maintain its parks for winter activities so residents are urged to take extra caution and be aware that use is at your own risk. There's free parking on site.
Rupert Park, Whitchurch-Stouffville
The toboggan hill, located at the corner of Rupert Ave. and Westlawn Crescent, offers a nice, gentle slope for younger sledding enthusiasts. There is free parking on site, but no washrooms.
The ROC, Georgina
This large recreation complex, 26479 Civic Centre Rd., offers a free, unsupervised toboggan run right next door to the tube and terrain park. Inflatable toboggans, GT Snow Racers, skis and snowboards aren’t permitted on the toboggan hill. There’s parking, washrooms and a chalet with food and drinks on site.
Uplands Golf Club & Ski Centre, Vaughan
You’ll find a toboggan hill outside the clubhouse, owned by the City of Vaughan, the hill starts on the first tee of the centre, 46 Uplands Ave., in Thornhill. The unsupervised toboggan hill is open daily, weather permitting. There’s free parking, washrooms plus food, snacks and beverages for sale in the clubhouse
