A water main break has caused traffic disruption in Mount Albert.

The town of East Gwillimbury announced the break has closed Main Street between Victoria Street and Centre Street Dec. 12.

According to Lloyd House Pub owner Doug Willitts, water started accumulating on the road around noon and quickly spread over the road and into the ditches. Willitts went knocking on doors telling people to get their sump pumps going.

The Lloyd House had to close, as it was without water service. Other businesses, such as the Twisted Fork, remain open on the road.

According to the town, water flow to buildings has been limited in the area. Staff will visit all affected homes and businesses.

The water remains safe to consume, but residents are asked to hold off on using any water until the repair work is complete.

Town employees are working with an external contractor to begin remedial work.

The town will provided further updates as they become available.
