Ontario is committed to helping seniors keep active, healthy, safe, independent, and socially connected in their own communities. Yet, many seniors face financial and other obstacles in accessing programs and services that will help support their overall health and well-being.

That is why Ontario is investing $14.1 million to support more than 300 Seniors Active Living Centre programs in communities across the province, benefiting seniors in Aurora and Newmarket.

As part of this investment, Aurora Seniors Centre is receiving $42,700 in operating funding and an additional special grant of $9,024.21. Newmarket Seniors Meeting Place is receiving $42,700 in operating funding and an additional special grant of $5,086.98.

“Supporting our seniors today is about investing in all of our futures. This funding will have a direct and positive impact on seniors in communities across the province by giving them an opportunity to take part in programs and services that will help keep them active, socially connected, and healthy,” said Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. “These programs and services support healthy aging and help seniors to live the quality lives they deserve.”

Seniors Active Living Centre programs support over 100,000 seniors across the province, and this funding will provide a variety of programming and activities to help seniors stay active, socially engaged, safe, and healthy. This is especially important given that about 30 per cent of Canadian seniors are at risk of becoming socially isolated.

“This funding will go a long way in helping seniors in Aurora and Newmarket stay active and socially connected, while also preventing social isolation,” said Christine Elliott, Member of Provincial Parliament for Newmarket-Aurora. “Seniors Active Living Centres provide a hub for seniors and their families to build positive connections, encourage physical activity, and in doing so, benefits everyone’s well-being.”

“We are thrilled to be receiving this funding from the province. Our seniors centre is a vibrant and active part of our community and we are always looking for ways to increase the programs and services we deliver through the Centre. We are committed to keeping our seniors active and healthy and this funding will help us do just that” said Mayor Tom Mrakas, Town of Aurora.

“The Newmarket Seniors Meeting place is a hub of activity and programming for seniors in our community. As the number of seniors in our community grows, we appreciate the support and partnership from the provincial government in providing opportunities for active living and healthier lifestyles for seniors at our Seniors Meeting Place” said Mayor John Taylor, Town of Newmarket.
