Mississauga has pledged $2.2 million toward a full-size Avro Arrow replica.
The replica of the supersonic jet, which was designed and built in Malton in the 1950s, would be placed next to the restored CF-100 in Paul Coffey Park. According to a city staff report, the Arrow project would “provide a significant landmark for Mississauga” and be visible for those flying in and out of Pearson airport.
The project would cost over $3.6 million in total, as per the report. Of the project’s cost, $2.2 million would be contributed by Mississauga through ward special projects and the municipal accommodation tax reserve funds.
Around $844,000 in donations and in-kind services have been pledged, including $100,000 from an anonymous donor and $56,360 from the Malton BIA -- who will be responsible for building and installing the replica.
Funding from the city would be contingent on the Malton BIA securing commitment of all funds and in-kind services for the project, including a $500,000 grant from the Canadian heritage department’s legacy fund.
The maximum amount that the fund will allocate is $500,000.
An estimated project timeline in the city staff report shows an intended start in winter of 2020 and completion in fall of 2022.
