This week, the Town of Newmarket hosted a delegation from Ukraine to discuss potential opportunities for partnership on projects and initiatives in the Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) sector.

The Newmarket visit, which took place at the Medical Arts Building at Southlake Regional Health Centre, was an information sharing session, networking and learning opportunity for 16 Ukrainian ICT companies interested in conducting business in Canada.

“On behalf of Newmarket council and staff, we are very happy to welcome our Ukrainian friends to our community,” said Newmarket Mayor John Taylor. “Partnering with other nations around the world and expanding our markets beyond our borders is a key part of Newmarket’s Economic Development Strategy that focuses on innovation, collaboration and urbanization.”

The session included representatives from the Town of Newmarket, York Region, Southlake Regional Health Centre and local and regional ICT companies. The goal of the Town and other stakeholders was to establish direct business contacts and find potential partners with leading Ukrainian technology companies. The meeting allowed all participants to strengthen business relationships for long-term cooperation and share information on Newmarket and York Region’s flourishing ICT sector.

Sean Stephens, president and CEO of Newmarket-based ICT company Treefrog Inc., addressed the audience and spoke about Newmarket’s unique business culture.

“Newmarket companies work together in a remarkable way -- the spirit of collaboration within the business community truly differentiates Newmarket from other communities, Stephens said. “Ukrainian tech companies would be well-served to seek partnerships with local businesses or establish a foothold in Newmarket to ease the transition into this market”.
