Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua

We are truly fortunate to live in a city defined by compassion, understanding and the spirit of generosity. Our citizens are committed to helping others and demonstrate it in many ways.

Make a difference, one toy at a time. On Monday, Nov. 18, we will launch the 10th annual City of Vaughan Toy Drive in support of the CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish. Since 2010, more than 80,000 toys have been collected for children in need in Vaughan and across the Greater Toronto Area. I ask all citizens to open their hearts and help us achieve our goal of collecting 15,000 toys this year.

New, unwrapped toys for children aged newborn to 18 years old may be dropped off at any Vaughan community centre, library or fire station between Monday, Nov. 18, and Friday, Dec. 6. Contributions can also be dropped off at Vaughan city hall until noon on Monday, Dec. 9.

We are also gearing up for the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour to make its much-anticipated stop in Vaughan. We will be hosting a flag-raising ceremony at Vaughan city hall on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 11:30 a.m. to share our love for hockey. Come and join in the fun and wear your favourite jersey, too.

The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre will become hockey central on Saturday, Jan. 11, and Sunday, Jan. 12, featuring free live entertainment, meet-and-greets with NHL alumni, local celebrities and hockey-themed activities for all ages to enjoy. We also look forward to welcoming hosts Ron MacLean and Tara Slone, who will cap off the weekend with a live outdoor viewing party of a Toronto Maple Leafs game on Sportsnet.

We have a proud hockey tradition in Vaughan, and this is our chance to come together to share our most cherished hockey stories with fans across the country. This is sure to be a weekend our community will never forget!

The City of Vaughan is offering many ways citizens can get involved in our community. From the launch of our annual toy drive campaign to celebrating Vaughan’s vibrant hockey culture, there are several exciting initiatives that you will not want to miss.
