In February 2016, the late Honourable Tobias C. Enverga Jr. introduced Bill S-218, An Act Respecting Latin American Heritage Month.
Bill S-218 sought to designate October, in each and every year, as Latin American Heritage Month in Canada.
The Government of Canada supported Bill S-218, which received Royal Assent on June 21, 2018.
On July 16, 2019, Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow wrote a letter to Richmond Hill Community Leader and Proclamation Advocate Norma Trivino, advising her that her request to proclaim October as Hispanic Heritage Month was approved and that it would be recognized by the City of Richmond Hill.
The Month of October 2019 marked a significant moment in history because it was the first time ever that Hispanic Heritage Month was recognized and observed in the City of Richmond Hill.
A celebration to honour this milestone occurred on Oct. 30 at Cosmo Music Superstore in Richmond Hill.
Designer and polymath Carlos Herrera presented a runway showcasing of his architectural aluminium jewelry.
