Don’t get your feathers in a bunch -- just yet.
The town is hosting a public information session for residents to learn more about backyard hens.
Earlier this year, backyard hens were discussed during a council meeting. Councillors were also presented with a staff report outlining several options, including a pilot project to allow backyard chickens in certain areas for a limited time. Another option was a licensing regime for backyard hens.
In York Region, only Newmarket and East Gwillimbury allow backyard chickens with a number of conditions such as: Prohibiting roosters; limiting the number of hens per residence and the number of residences with backyard chickens, building standards for chicken coops; and a prescribed lot sizes for backyard coops.
Residents can also add their comments through an online survey. Hard copies of the survey are also available at various town facilities.
