This is a status update on E.J. Sand P.S. -- the Markham school that's been temporarily housed in a Vaughan location until the school can be rebuilt.

School geography: The former Holy Family Catholic Elementary School building at 21 Mullen Dr., now says EJ Sand Public School.

JUST THE FACTS

Construction: The new EJ Sand school is being built on Henderson Street (Markham). During construction, EJ Sand is being housed in the former Holy Family building.

History: In 2015, the education ministry announced funding to replace EJ Sand due to its faulty condition. EJ Sand Public School and the Woodland Building was torn down in early 2019 and the sites will be combined. The former Woodland Public School was moved to another site in 2009 (120 Royal Orchard Blvd., Markham). The Catholic board leased the Holy Family building to the public school board.

Progress: The school board has received ministry approval to buy an opened road allowance owned by the city. The site plan approval process is almost complete. The board is waiting on approval to proceed with tendering the project.

Delay: Due to this delay, the project will not be able to open for September 2020 as expected. The revised opening date is September 2021.

In the interim: Until the revised opening date, EJ Sand PS will continue to run in the former Holy Family ES.
