Residents of the Vaughan-Woodbridge riding has given Liberal Francesco Sorbara another four years to represent them as their MP.
After “marching” to victory and defeating Conservative Teresa Cruze by more than 5,000 votes with 165 of 197 polls reporting, Sorbara told his supporters it’s not about being “impressive.”
“It’s about the last four years of my life, my family’s life, being dedicated to this community,” he said.
He also reminded his supporters especially amid a fiercely competitive federal election that almost brought the ugly in some of its contenders, that in politics, “you can always control your local.”
After knocking more than 15,000 doors, Sorbara said Vaughan is “diverse,” alluding to fears the Conservative party might not be right for a more inclusive Canada.
Sorbara expressed his appreciation to Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and his “wisdom.”
He noted how Bevilacqua often cites how people in Vaughan speak at least 106 languages.
“The residents have put faith in me and that’s the biggest compliment one can have,” he added. “Tonight residents of Vaughan-Woodbridge have put faith in me again and with that, I and my team commit.”
Vaughan-Woodbridge was created by the 2012 federal electoral boundaries' redistribution and was legally defined in the 2013 representation order. It came into effect after dropping of the writ for the 2015 federal election.
The population of the Vaughan-Woodbridge area is 105,228, according to the 2016 Statistics Canada data. The 2016 data shows two main groups -- those younger than 14 are estimated to be 18,340 in population, and 65 and older are about 17,400 in number.
