Backyard Tree Planting Program Expanded

The City of Markham, in partnership with York Region and LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests), is offering an additional 50 trees in time for fall planting after the first 50 were snapped up by homeowners in the spring and summer.

“This is an exciting partnership. I am proud of Markham residents who participated, and I encourage more to get planting,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Together, we are fighting climate change. By planting a tree and adding to our urban canopy, we are significantly contributing to creating a healthier, greener world now and for future generations.”

Endorsed by the City of Markham’s Trees for Tomorrow initiative, LEAF’s Backyard Tree Planting Program provides trees to Markham residents at an additional discounted price through the Full Service or Do-It-Yourself programs. Markham homeowners get advice from a certified arborist, access to a selection of native trees at subsidized prices and have the option of full-service tree planting. Each residential property qualifies for a maximum of 5 trees at $50 (+HST) for each evergreen tree and $100 (+HST) for each deciduous tree. Every effort is made to ensure that each tree planted will thrive and LEAF will consider factors such as soil type, level of sunlight, location and the personal preference of the homeowner. LEAF will also provide a tree care guide and follow-up advice by e-mail or phone.

Multi-unit and business property owners in Markham can also access a similar program through LEAF for trees at subsidized prices of $150 to $220 (+HST) per tree.

Tree planting on public and private lands is critical towards achieving an urban canopy of 30% in the City of Markham. Trees provide economic benefits by increasing property values, reducing energy consumption and reducing storm-related flooding. With growing concerns about climate change, habitat loss and human health, tree planting is one way to respond to environmental challenges and contributes to a healthier and greener environment.

Markham resident Pat Durst first accessed this LEAF program in 2008 to plant two trees in her backyard. She loved the convenience so much that she turned to them again when she had to remove a dying ash tree this year. “I contacted LEAF again about their program of working with the City of Markham which had a discount for tree planting, plus I was able to apply the York Region Emerald Ash Borer rebate to help defray the costs of planting new trees to replace the ash tree.“
