A report that could determine whether Mississauga separates from the Region of Peel has been finalized, according to Steve Clark, Ontario's minister of municipal affairs.

The report is part of the Ford government's regional government review, which, as per the province, will produce recommendations aiming to "improve regional governance and service delivery" for 82 upper and lower-tier municipalities.

While Clark said he received the final report Sept. 20, news on whether the review will affect Mississauga's future in Peel won't come until at least Oct. 28 when the Ontario government sits again.

"I'm going to take a lot of time, not just to review the document but to also share with my colleagues so again, I'll have more to say once the legislature goes back," Clark said.

Mississauga has long been a proponent of leaving Peel -- in March, city council passed a motion asking the province for its independence from the region.

Brampton and Caledon have supported keeping Peel intact.

The city also sent out 230,000 postcards to residents as part of its "One City, One Voice" campaign. The cards said that if Mississauga separated from Peel, the city would no longer be "forced to subsidized Brampton and Caledon," and asked residents to send the cards to Premier Doug Ford.
